A Historic Run Ends

After 36 years, the NBA on TNT aired its final game on May 31, 2025, during Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals, where the Indiana Pacers beat the New York Knicks 125–108. This marked the end of TNT’s NBA coverage due to new media deals with ESPN/ABC, NBC, and Amazon Prime Video. TNT’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), tried to match Amazon’s $1.8 billion offer but was rejected by the NBA, leading to a lawsuit settled in November 2024. While TNT lost game broadcasts, *Inside the NBA* will live on, and its beloved crew is moving forward with new plans.

*Inside the NBA* Moves to ESPN

The iconic studio show *Inside the NBA*, featuring Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O’Neal, will continue on ESPN and ABC starting in the 2025-26 season. The show, produced by TNT Sports, keeps its core team intact, with most episodes still filmed in Atlanta. Ernie Johnson, the host since 1990, signed off emotionally, saying, “I’m proud to say for the last time, ‘Thanks for watching us. It’s the NBA on TNT.’” Barkley, who joined in 2000, chose to stay with the crew despite offers from NBC and Amazon, citing loyalty to TNT. Shaq, a 2011 addition, signed a $15 million deal to stay, excited to “bring the pain” to ESPN. Kenny Smith, with TNT since 1998, also committed to the move, emphasizing the team’s unique chemistry.

Game Broadcasters Find New Homes

Kevin Harlan, Reggie Miller, and Stan Van Gundy called TNT’s final game. Harlan, a lead play-by-play voice, will join Amazon Prime Video alongside Ian Eagle, continuing his energetic commentary. Reggie Miller, who spent 19 years with TNT and 18 as a Pacer, reflected on his fortunate career and is expected to explore opportunities with NBC or Amazon, though specifics remain unclear. Stan Van Gundy, a seasoned analyst, is also likely to join NBC or Amazon, leveraging his experience from TNT’s high-profile games.

A Legacy of Excellence

TNT’s NBA coverage, with 21 Emmy Awards, set a high standard. The final broadcast honored the production crew, many of whom secured roles at NBC and Amazon. Fans flooded social media with tributes, calling it “the end of an era.” While *Inside the NBA* continues, the loss of TNT’s game broadcasts closes a legendary chapter, but its stars are ready for new beginnings.
