Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, following a month-long hospitalization for double pneumonia. He died peacefully at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta, just a day after delivering his Easter blessing from a wheelchair .
Elected in 2013 as the first Jesuit and first Latin American pontiff, Francis broke with centuries of tradition by choosing to live simply and emphasizing a “poor Church for the poor.” His papacy was marked by humility, compassion, and a commitment to social justice.

Among his most notable achievements was the 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’, which called for urgent action on climate change and became a cornerstone of global environmental discourse . He also reformed the Roman Curia, allowing laypeople, including women, to lead Vatican departments, promoting inclusivity and transparency .
Francis extended a welcoming hand to marginalized communities, famously stating, “Who am I to judge?” regarding LGBTQ+ individuals, and supported civil unions for same-sex couples . He also condemned the Church’s historical treatment of Indigenous peoples in Canada, labeling it as genocide .

However, his tenure was not without controversy. His approach to clerical sexual abuse faced criticism; while he implemented reforms, some felt his initial responses were inadequate . Additionally, his progressive stances, such as permitting blessings for same-sex couples, sparked opposition from conservative factions within the Church .
Despite health challenges, including a partial lung removal in his youth and recent kidney issues, Francis remained active in his duties until shortly before his death .
Pope Francis leaves behind a legacy of compassion, humility, and a reimagined vision for the Catholic Church in the modern world.
